Overview
The Kollter RS1, a flagship model from Tinbot Technology GmbH, reflects the company’s innovative approach to electric motorcycles. Founded in 2019 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Tinbot Technology has quickly made a name for itself in the electric motorcycle industry. Within just a few years, the Kollter series has expanded its reach to 63 dealerships across Europe, including 45 in Germany.
The launch of the Kollter RS1 at the end of 2023 marked a significant milestone, showcasing its high torque, high speed, and extended range capabilities, setting a new benchmark for electric motorcycles.
Equipped with cutting-edge features, the RS1 includes an internal fast charger compatible with the J1772 plug, electronic ABS braking, a multi-functional full-color touchscreen display, and a lightweight aluminum frame. Its powertrain boasts a peak output of 46.6HP from its motor, alongside an 8.6kWh battery, providing a range of up to 200km in urban settings and 100km on highways.
Battery and Charging System
The RS1’s battery, sourced from CATL—a supplier for Tesla—supports a 5C discharge rate, enabling 47HP of instant power without compromising battery lifespan. With an 8.6kWh capacity, it promises a range of 200km at 70km/h and 100km at speeds between 100-120km/h. The battery’s lifecycle extends up to 8,000 cycles, equating to approximately 22 years of daily charging. Its Bluetooth-enabled BMS allows for real-time status monitoring, and its placement enhances the motorcycle’s balance with a low center of gravity. Charging options include a built-in charger for both 220V (Level 2) and 110V (Level 1) ports, requiring around 6 hours for a full charge from depletion.
Motor and Drivetrain
The RS1 is powered by an axial flux motor, delivering 12kW nominal and 35kW (46.6 HP) peak power. The motor weighs only 7.8kg, which makes it one of the most efficient motors, generating 5.9 HP per kilogram. The motor’s torque is enhanced through a gearbox. A carbon belt drive transmission is the second stage of gear reduction which provides 900NM of torque at the rear wheel, enabling acceleration from 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. The motor is air cooled and can be programmed by the controller for two-stage energy regeneration when coasting or braking.
Controller
A fully programmable controller, accessible via Bluetooth, supports up to 600 Amps of input current. It’s equipped with a processor for monitoring and diagnosing electrical components, employing a Field Oriented Control (FOC) algorithm for optimal efficiency across all speeds. Major features as acceleration, final speed, and the level of the two stage EABS braking can be programmed proportionally to the motor RPM.
Chassis
The RS1’s chassis, made entirely of aluminum alloy with an exoskeleton design, weighs only 15.5kg (35lbs). It supports the battery in the lowest part of the frame, enabling a large storage compartment in the traditional gas tank area, while lowering the motorcycle’s center of gravity.
Suspension and Comfort
The motorcycle feature adjustable front and rear suspension, with a 700mm length and 55mm width front inverted shock absorbers, and a 350mm nitrogen preloaded rear mono-shock, enhancing riding comfort and performance.
Brakes and Safety
For braking, the RS1 employs dual 280mm front and single 210mm rear Brembo disk brakes. It features multifunctional braking system which ensures superior safety and efficiency:
- Wheel independent ABS – ensures antilocking of each wheel independently by the Central Electronic Unit
- CBS – Connected Braking System – ensures proportional pressure to each wheel based on its traction with the ground.
- EABS – Electric Adsorbing Braking system. It is two-stage braking system for recuperating the idle energy back to the battery. First stage is 5% to 20% when coasting, and second stage 20% to 65% when the brake is applied.
The ABS and CBS system and a two-stage regenerative braking system, ensuring superior stopping power and energy recovery.
Lighting
It boasts dual 12,000-lumen headlights for superior illumination, supported by thirty LED running lights for enhanced visibility and safety.
Display and Interface
A 7” full-color touchscreen TFT display serves as the central hub for monitoring, diagnostics and controlling various aspects of the motorcycle, from performance metrics to system settings, enhanced with Bluetooth connectivity for seamless integration.
Conclusion
The Kollter RS1 is a highly practical urban motorcycle that effortlessly navigates the distances within cities, especially those with populations concentrated in suburban districts. Its highway speed capability of 130 km/h, coupled with rapid acceleration, ensures safety both on highways and in urban areas. The bike’s low weight and center of gravity make it easily manageable for riders of all levels, including beginners. The integration of three independent braking modes guarantees reliable stopping power under any road condition. Despite its long-range capability, the dual charging system, complete with an integrated charger, effectively dispels any concerns over range anxiety. As a legitimate two-seater, it easily handles even the steepest inclines. Compared to gas motorbikes, the RS1 features a large storage box on the place of their gas tanks.
Moreover, the combination of federal and provincial financial incentives, alongside benefits such as free parking and permission to use city bus lanes, positions the Kollter RS1 as an ideal choice for daily commuters. This motorcycle not only stands out for its performance and safety features but also for its contribution to sustainable urban mobility.
